In the middle part of the 17th century, the astronomer, Oswalt Karll Leippoldt, debuts his newly minted telescope at the court of the Holy Roman Emperor. To the irritation of Leippoldt, the monarch is disinterested in his invention, and is further distracted by the arrival of a stranger to the court – one Doctor Vallentin Vysarius. A masterful magician, his illusions capture utterly the attentions of the young emperor to the exclusion of almost all else. So, when the astronomer spies a massive object on a crash course with the Imperial Palace, his warnings go ignored by all but the court jester. With the help of the clown, Leippoldt must fight to win back his favor in court, to defeat the mysterious magician, and to save the empire from certain doom.
